The year 2026 marks 100 years since the death of Emil Kraepelin (15 February 1856–7 October 1926) and only a little over 125 years since he first used the term “dementia praecox” to label the syndrome he had first described in 1899 and which later, following Bleuler, came to be called schizophrenia. He wrote beautifully, was thoroughly committed to the scientific method, was systematic in his observations and meticulous in his record keeping, and developed a formidable clinical and research department and professional legacy. Arguably, the nine editions of his Handbook of Psychiatry and his original descriptions of schizophrenia and manic depression (manischdepressives Irresein, now bipolar disorder) have provided the most consistent backbone for research and clinical practice in psychiatry since his time. However, both his observations and formulations have been repeatedly challenged and his views on degeneration and eugenics have continued causing concern ever since
