One in a series of imaging courses, this book covers musculoskeletal system and breast imaging. Part 1 is an integrated approach to imaging of musculoskeletal disorders, with an emphasis on conventional radiography, while part 2 has four chapters on breast imaging.
Purpose
The purpose is twofold: to provide an integrated approach to musculoskeletal imaging, with an emphasis on conventional radiography to assist in the interpretation of bone disorders and to suggest appropriate use of imaging techniques in the evaluation of these conditions; and to provide updated information on breast imaging.
Audience
The audience is mainly practicing radiologists. The book is most helpful to general radiologists, rather than the musculoskeletal subspecialists, and it should be useful for radiology residents. It is also intended to direct clinicians to the appropriate imaging modalities in the care of their patients.
Features
The first section discusses the various imaging modalities in musculoskeletal radiology, although there is an emphasis on conventional radiography due to its importance in characterizing many lesions, especially bone tumors. Other sections cover infection and inflammatory conditions, metabolic bone disease, and bone tumors; the use of MRI of the knee, hip and pelvis, shoulder and temporomandibular joint, and bone marrow disorders; and, finally, trauma and soft tissue lesions. Part 2 on breast imaging covers mammography and other imaging modalities, as well as interventional techniques and PET/CT in the evaluation of breast cancer.
Assessment
This is a reasonably good resource for musculoskeletal and breast imaging, particularly for general radiologists and radiology residents. The chapters on musculoskeletal infection imaging and PET/CT imaging of breast cancer are particularly comprehensive. The previous edition was published in 2005, and this edition does a good job of updating much of the information, particularly regarding MRI of various skeletal disorders and PET/CT imaging.
